Founder Bio: Mark Knowlton

Mark Knowlton conducted his first technical interview in 1997 using a script handed to him by a technical manager. What began as a necessity quickly became a discipline — and ultimately, an obsession with mastering technical evaluation at a level most recruiters never attempt.

Early in his career on the agency side, Mark distinguished himself by going deeper than résumé keyword matching. He immersed himself in technical subject matter so he could conduct probing interviews that surfaced genuine expertise. In one defining placement, he submitted a C++ developer who had not written code in four years. Rather than relying on résumé optics, Mark provided a detailed technical analysis of their discussion. That analysis secured the interview and resulted in a $22,000 placement — on a candidate most recruiters would have dismissed in seconds.

Over two decades, Mark refined a repeatable method: evaluate real technical ownership, articulate it clearly, and empower the person who owns the hiring manager relationship to make an evidence-based case that cannot be ignored.

He founded TechScreen in 2016 to productize that methodology. The original SaaS platform provided structured technical interview frameworks, but the rise of applied AI transformed what was possible. Today, TechScreen’s AI Verify platform delivers Dev Manager-level technical interview analysis in minutes, allowing recruiters to validate skills and present hiring managers with structured, defensible insight.

TechScreen has now conducted more than 65,000 technical evaluations and pioneered a mobile-native Assessment Integrity Framework that structurally defeats AI-assisted interview manipulation.

Mark’s core belief remains unchanged:
The interview should determine whether a candidate owns the knowledge — not whether they can retrieve it.
